About Me

It's always about songs - that what makes singers different from other instrumentalists and what fascinates me. Communication is always the aim, and having the confidence to tell the story of the song - even if there are no words - and be able to make music.

As a teacher, I try and encourage individuals to find their true 'voice', whether as singers or as songwriters. I have been teaching for about 15 years and writing songs for 14. Honey is one I particularly like. My song 'Harbour Lights' was recently performed by over 500 singers as part of Sing for Water 2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhVjuaYRL3A&t=179s

Alpacazz, the jazz/blues band I played in, recorded some songs at Ally Lee's Studio in Alnwick - this is the link to our songs on Soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/#alpacas-1 I am currently working again with Marianne Newstead in Treble In Mind, an a cappella trio who performed in many festivals last year. including BAAfest. I am also performing in a jazz trio The Magic Slate Band

About Me

I am an experienced voice teacher, passionate about the way the voice works and how it can work for each individual. Having worked for a long time on my own voice, I hope I can offer some help to other people. I have been told I am good at confidence-building and in removing 'blocks' that may be in the way of singers realising their full potential.

I teach Trinity Guildhall Grade exams up to Grade 8. Please let me know if you are looking for formal grade tuition when you contact me. However, if you are a complete beginner looking to try out singing, please do contact me as I can address your individudual requirements.

I primarily teach in Northumberland, Scotland, Tyne and Wear and Cumbria, but can travel further afield.

Community Musician

At college my degree course was very heavily biased towards community music. I have found, to my surprise, that I have come to regard myself as a community musician as much as I do a singer or singing teacher, as I really enjoy working with groups and encouraging music making and creativity with all sorts of people. Often, I am able to work with other musicians and collaborate on projects, which is very rewarding. Please contact me to let me know your particular requirements. In the last few years I have been lucky to do some vocal coaching for Duns Operatic Society, Bridge Singers, Felton and Dunbar Sings.

Choir & Workshop Leader

I am choir leader for Amble's Community Choir Harbour Lights. We went to London 16/17 September 2017 to take part in Sing for Water - my song 'Lights' was selected for this National choir event and we were very excited to be taking part! On Sunday 20 May 2018 we took part in 'Alnwick Sings' - Rutter's Magnificat and L'Estrange's 'Ahoy! Sing for the Mary Rose' along with approx 300 singers from our area, at Sage Gateshead.

I am also running a school high school ensemble and a fortnightly workplace choir the Earl Grey Teahouse Singers.

The wonderful thing about my job is its variety, and I always on the lookout for new projects and challenges. I have worked for and with many people and organisations, such as Jilly Jarman and Bluejam Arts (of which I am a Director) http://www.bluejamcumbria.com, 20,000 Voices and Woodhorn Colliery Museum among others. I can lead singing at any social or training event, children or adults. I have also worked with Duns Operatic Society, The Bridge Singers and Dunbar Sings on vocal improvement. See also Soup and Sing page.

I love collaborations and I love listening to other people, and am a bit of a magpie! I write for the two bands I am in, for Soup and Sing workshops, local choirs, anyone who will have me. It's the most fun in the world, and I like to help others with their creativity, too. If you want me to collaborate on something or run a songwriting workshop, please let me know. I am practiced at developing songwriting in a group context.

Many songs have been written with Paul for Other People's Partners http://soundcloud.com/other-peoples-partners/just-one-more

My song 'Harbour Lights', written for Amble's Community Choir Harbour Lights, was recently performed at Sing for Water 2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhVjuaYRL3A&t=179s and featured on BBC Radio Newcastle's breakfast show in the Winter of 2018.

Current performing projects include Treble In Mind, an a cappella trio with Marianne Newstead and Alison Scott. We have performed at many festivals including Maddy Prior's Stepping Stones Festival, BAAfest. We are currently arranging material for the forthcoming summer and writing some of our own songs.

I'm also singing jazz standards with some fantastic instrumentalists as The Magic Slate Band. Let me know if you need a jazz trio! There's also a Blues band I can get my hands on if you need one for a party......
